Many people make New Year’s Resolutions. Some people achieve those resolutions. Many fail to achieve them. Would you like to increase your chances of achieving your goals for the year? First, take some time to think about your reasons for setting the goal.
What is important to you about the changes you would like to make in the New Year? Think about how the past year has gone. Also imagine how life would look like if you accomplish your goals for the next year. How will these goals affect those you care about and future generations? Will these goals honor God or do they challenge or ignore the wisdom in the Holy Bible? Paul gave some good advise in his letter:
“12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Whatever you do in the year ahead for your goals, you should do them to honor God. We have lots of options of what to do with our time in America. We can spend our time on the pleasures of the world that are brief or waste our time hurting others selfishly. Alternatively, we could take an eternal perspective and focus on loving others. The only things that last forever are people and loving acts of kindness.
Second, you can do to increase your chances of accomplishing your New Year’s resolutions is to make them SMART Goals.

Third, you can get someone to give you support, encouragement, and accountability, like a Life Coach. Making significant changes alone can be difficult. Having someone to walk with you through the process dramatically improves the likelihood and speed of accomplishing your goals.
